Gloucester was made lieutenant of Ireland in 1392, but in 1397 Richard arrested him and two other leading appellants. He was the fifth of the five sons of Edward III who survived to adulthood.

Her son, Humphrey Stafford was created Duke of Buckingham in 1444 and also inherited part of the de Bohun estates. The rumour, probably a deliberate one, was false, and about the same time a justice, Sir William Rickhill (d. 1407), was sent to Calais with instructions dated the 17th of August to obtain a confession from Gloucester.
