As a writing exercise, I will try to write my review as poorly as the author of this book because convoluted, as it may be, and history has a way of being confusing, which James Brown's drummer might know, but the Bomb Squad tried to use a different mix, but RFK was killed in the 60s, which history will affect... Ugh, I can't do it anymore. Which I listen to from time to time anyway.

In the process he shows how the group built on and fed off the energy of those predecessors, updating their sound for the Reagan era and the age of samplers. Clearly someone who lives hip hop culture. A reissue of a classic, not much to say to those who are into hip-hop, definitely a must have to any record collection. This was truly a certain type of golden age for hop-hop, and there is no getting around the flow and aggressive style that Chuck D. promoted along with his talented crew in Terminator X, the Bomb Squad, and of course Flavor Flav.

In terms of other 33 1/3 books that I have read it is somewhere near the top. Before hiphop took the money and ran, Public Enemy were turning white people on to the Black Experience. This one is a good example. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 9, 2020. I bought this album as well as Fear of a Black Planet off Amazon. Which I listen to from time to time anyway. Typical PE. I really enjoy the 33 1/3 series of small books about records, and though I've tried a couple that did fail to entertain, for the most part they're really fun reads. I had high hopes for this 33 1/3 and it certainly did NOT let me down!

YEEEEEAH BOIIIIII. This one is a good example. Decided to finally pick up their LP for old time sake. Personally I don't care about the author's experience with the record (which is a mode that many 33 1/3 books fall into), I want to know why the artist made their decisions and what led up to those decisions. A very high quality record for a legendary rap album. I liked it. Fear Of A Black Planet [2 CD][Deluxe Edition][Explicit], Straight Outta Compton [LP][Remastered][Explicit].

The book is dedicated solely to breaking down Public Enemy's second album track by track, sample by sample, scratch by scratch, and provides some minor background details on Chuck D and the Bomb Squad (and, to a much lesser degree, Flav, Griff and Terminator X).

Using production techniques that have never been duplicated, the Bomb Squad plundered and reconfigured their own c. Christopher R. Weingarten provides a thrilling account of how the Bomb Squad produced such a singular-sounding record: engineering, sampling, scratching, constructing, deconstructing, reconstructing - even occasionally stomping on vinyl that sounded too clean.

The Bomb Squad will go down in history as one of the best production teams in all of history as far as the record industry is concerned. Extremely well-researched book about one of hip-hop's seminal albums. As someone who has listened to the album thousands of times over the past 22 years, I was amazed at how little I actually knew about it but not surprised to learn that no track is compiled randomly, but rather is painstakingly constructed to maximize its political and cultural relevance. on the radio and grabbing "I guarantee you- no more music by these suckers" from the DJ.
